Things that you should not do to your teeth

Just like any bone in your body, your teeth can wear down and break. In addition to proper oral hygiene, there are things that you should not do to prevent the wear and tear of your teeth.

1. Don’t open bottle caps and wrappers with your teeth,
Yes, using your teeth as a can opener, chewing on pencils/pens, popcorn kernels and even ice can make them dull and even crack your teeth.
2. Don’t go to the dentist without brushing or flossing your teeth first
This should be obvious, but to some folks out there please brush before you go in to see your dentist. It will make the checkup a bit easier and he/she and their staff will appreciate it greatly.
3. Don’t smoke or chew tobacco.
You’ve heard this a million times before. Not smoking and chewing tobacco improves your overall health which includes your oral health as well. Smoking and chewing tobacco not only discolors and weakens teeth but can also lead to gum disease and oral cancer.
4. Don’t bite your nails.
Same as chewing on pencils, you nails can wear down your teeth and even cause chipping.
5. Don’t use someone else’s toothbrush.
This again should be an obvious fact but it happens especially between lovers. However, you should prove your love in some other way because that toothbrush you are brushing your pearly white with that does not happen to be yours harbors foreign bacteria that can harm you.
6. Don’t let your child go to bed with a bottle in his or her mouth
containing anything but plain water.
Milk, formula and juices can cause what’s known as baby bottle tooth decay.
They remain on a child’s teeth for extended periods of time.
7. Don’t suck your thumbs.
Believe it or not some adults do suck their thumbs!! Sucking your thumb damages tooth alignment. I encourage parents to prevent their kids from sucking their thumbs and stop using pacifiers and bottles past the age of two because they are just as bad.
8. Don’t go to bed without brushing and flossing your teeth.
The plaque will remain on your teeth for an extended period making you more vulnerable to gingivitis (gum inflammation). Most research has shown that if you remove plaque and the bacteria it harbors within twenty four hours, it does not have time to produce enough acid to damage your teeth. At minimum guys, once a day is a must!

9. Don’t use super-abrasive toothpaste.
As the name implies, it’s SUPER-ABRASIVE!!! Yeah it will take out that stubborn stain but it may also take a part of your tooth along with it.
10. Don’t pierce your tongue or any part of your mouth.
Tongue and other oral piercing can cause excessive drooling, infection, pain and swelling, chipped teeth, and nerve damage. And in many cases, the trauma of the stud or ring gently but repeatedly hitting the lower front teeth and can cause the teeth to fall out over time. Constant trauma of the roof of your mouth can also cause painful blisters.
